FIRST EMISSION-FREE THEATER TOUR HITS THE ROAD

This fall, the spine-chilling success Horror by Jakop Ahlbom Company embarks on an electrifying new journey: a fully electric tour. As emission-free city zones approach (starting January 1, 2025), the theater world faces a major challenge to electrify its transport. To meet this challenge, the theater company has partnered with Pieter Smit Group, the largest tour supplier in Europe’s live sector. Together, they are taking a significant step towards sustainable touring.

Seeing is Believing

In the transition to zero-emission transport, assumptions and misunderstandings can persist without real-world examples. That’s why a comprehensive partnership has been established with Topsector Logistics’ innovation program and research firm Districon. This collaboration will collect and share valuable insights with both the performing arts and logistics sectors.

Charging Behind the Scenes

Theaters play a crucial role in this pilot, addressing one of the biggest challenges: battery charging. During the day, when theater power use is low, the truck can be charged from the stage’s power supply. At night, the same connection powers the lights and sound. This efficient approach prevents grid congestion and allows charging without extra strain on the power network.

Theater as a Testing Ground

Jakop Ahlbom Company aims to be circular and climate-positive by 2028. With upcoming zero-emission zones, this is the perfect moment to test a concrete solution. Daan Stigter, sustainability manager at Jakop Ahlbom Company, explains: “In theater, we’re used to innovating on stage, and now we’re bringing that spirit to transport. With Horror, the thrills extend beyond the stage to cutting-edge innovations behind the scenes.”

Lykle Hemminga, Country Manager at Pieter Smit Netherlands, adds: “We’re proud to take on this adventure with Jakop Ahlbom and lead the way in electric theater touring. This first step helps us explore the pros and cons of this new approach, so we’re ready for the future.”
